Hoss Cartwright was written as the slow one, the big brother, the kind one. Gentle, a bit dim, comic relief in a family of sharper men. The man playing him had a master's degree in dramatic arts, and nobody else in that cast had a postgraduate qualification of any kind. He was born Bobby Dan Davis Blocker into Cald, Texas in 1928. 6 foot 4 and 300
